I don't understand the relevance, its like saying whats the biggest caught on a float, or a pop up, or a bit of maize

Thats a great fish Mungo.
The relavance is the way it was caught. There is a UK. record for the biggest surface caught rig-why not a record for Zig ?
It would be nice to know Thomo-whats wrong with that?

Thanks Welsh -80. I believe this fish was caught on a surface bait-is there anyone who would keep any kind of a record of fish caught by this method. ( Zig Rig ) ?
I cant find anything on the web.
Any help will be welcome.
Thanks.

Nothing wrong with your interest but like I said before, where do you stop with records? And in fact with something as random as the type of rig used who'd ever bother to "claim" it anyway

Also an angler could claim the fish came on a certain rig or bait but this could be untrue.
Not that it ever happens with sponsored bait anglers though as we all know...

I was using a zig-rig when i was about 10 years old in bushy park, long before it was given that stupid name. Does that help?

They've been using them on my local water since the mid 80's at least, always known as long tails around here, never heard of a zig until the mid 90's I guess, though of course anchored floaters have been used for donkeys years

A bit like me then. I'm approaching 17 from the wrong direction. Must get the timeometer fixed on Sidrat.
I had a twentyone on a 'zig' last summer which was the largest I have caught on that method. I don't use it very much. However I packed up immediately afterwards and as I usually do did not remove the pop-up so I could chuck it all out quickly next sesh.
The following day I was back and tested the rig in the edge...and the pop up sunk really slowly.
So now to this day I don't know whether I had this fish on a zig........or a bottom bait on a 4' hooklink. :?

Here's one then, when does a pop up rig become a zig? I've seen people saying they've caught on 12 inch zigs, i've had plenty like that but i'd just call it a pop up off the lead, hopefully we can solve this one, i've not slept for weeks 8O

Hello Thomo,
These questsion is easy. It a pop up if it 12" from swivel on lead setup and it zig rig if it 13" or more than that. If it in be tween it a noddy rig.
Tone. :)

Ah, what if you have a 14 inch hooklink with a shot two inches from the swivel?

What about if it's on the surface or just under it, popped up from the bottom? These rigs were banned on a local club water 20 years ago as they were devastating (along with the suspender and beach-caster) methods - the fish not seeing the line on the surface.

Anyway, if young Kirky goes through with his plan for an all over body waxing and Dom can superglue some fins on 'im then I'm sure someone will have a go with a zig-rigged treat of some sort! :)

I didn't realise there was a BRFC official record for surface caught carp!

Does anyone know what the record is for the biggest carp caught on a blunt size 4 hook on a 4 in hooklink with an 8 oz lead with a single peanut as bait?

I would do if you swapped the 8oz lead for a 6 ;)

Never understood the beachcaster getting banned Rob, I fully intend to use it quite a bit this year

wow mate you are so funny.
Daft remarks from people who dont know how to fish it--sit behind bottom baits all sessions and wonder why they dont catch.
My question was only out of wonder-I dont know what your problem is

Chill out pal its only a bit of fishing

Like I said no problem you wondering if that wets your whistle, just as there's no problem in me thinking its irrelevant, and I should imagine most have caught a few on "long tails" its hardly rocket science is it

There is no record for a surface caught carp

Just because someone claims it doesn't make it official does it, unless the BRFC accept a fish it is not a record, simple as, and as there is no category for surface caught carp then how can it be a record?

Who said i don't fish zigs? My question was out of wander also - wandering why anyone would care

Being slightly more helpful.....

There was some chap on Cemex saying that he or his mate had caught some 60s form France on an 8lb Duble Strength hooklink on a zig.

Fishing for carp of that size on those hooklinks is very irresponsible imo and certainly should not be applauded.

As others have said shimano i dont think there is an actual record for a fish caught on a zig as it cant be proved not only that but records such as biggest fish caught on a size 4 hook...biggest fish caught on a size 18mm boilie....etc etc would occur its easier to have UK CARP RECORD.

If you think you have caught a potential whacker on a zig rig lets hear about it mate or are you trying to find out what the biggest fish caught on a zig is because you aim to beat it

This is something I cant get my head around, mostly due to having not caught yet using one, I have been trying during the day, which happens to be the slowest time on the bottom for the lake i am fishing, hook-links ranging from 1ft up to being able to view hook bait on the surface, but seagulls stopped that that length

How do you fish it ? I have been tightening the line up as tight as I can using my swinger so the slightest movement at the lead end would cause the swinger to drop back sharpish hopefully helping to hook the fish when it has the bait in its mouth.

Could that cause it to pull the bait out also

I have had the drop back, but it never goes any where other then down, could be fish swimming into the line causing this. so far tried 14/16 pop ups (cork dust ones) and imitation chum mixers. I now have some foam in many colors to try next time too.

Using a 10lb clear line, with is being held up easy by the baits as i have seen them 50 yards out on the surface, a 2/3oz inline lead, no leader/tubing, just a silicone sleeve over the eye of the swivel to kick the hook-link out on the cast and pva on the hook, I have tried size 6/8/10 hooks, Esp T6, one good thing though I have yet to reel in a tangled mess, nor have I put any sort of feed out over the top once cast out!

its something I will keep trying with in till I catch, but so far not having much luck, and as the hours tick by start thinking maybe I should have left the baits on the bottom, but its hard to resist temptation chucking a zig out when you can view them swimming around on the top
